Mao and the CCP had liberated a large area of northern China from the Japanese by 1945.
The United States was supporting Chiang. Under George Marshall of the military the United States wanted to form a coalition government between the CCP and the nationalists.
During this time Mao also led a peasant army which was known as the People's Liberation Army or the PLA.
Chiang and the Nationalists lost the civil war. They were then forced to flee to the Island of Formosa (Taiwan) which could become Nationalist China.
