Deng XIaoping takes over, 1979
Quote: "We mustn't fear to adopt the advanced management methods applied in capitalist
countries (...) The very essence of socialism is the liberation and development of the productive systems (...) Socialism and market economy are not incompatible (...) We should be concerned about right-wing deviations, but most
of all, we must be concerned about left-wing deviations." - Deng Xiaoping
Political Changes:
-Deng Xiaoping wanted China to reunify with Taiwan and Hong Kong.
-He assures Taiwan that if they join they will still have autonomy.
-Taiwan does not join but trade increases between the two countries.
-In 1987 Taiwan lifts its band that disallowed its people to visit the mainland.
-Hong Kong joins China in 1997 but is a Special Adminitrative Region (SAR).
-Institutes agricultural reform.
-Encouraged farmers to sell on the open market
-Allowed contracting on plots of land. This was the productive responsibility system. Excess profits that were made could be kept.
-China accepts loans and foreign investment
-Joined the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank
Social Changes:
-Single child policy introduced in 1979. The point was to slow down the population growth in China. A negative impact of the single child policy was people taking gender preferances (male).
- There were tax benefits brought in for families who accepted and followed this single child policy. For those who did not there were concequences, for example they either paid a lot more and sometimes they even lost their private plots of land.
- The marriage law was brought in in 1980 (confirmed the rights of women and raised age of marriaghe M=20 to 22 W=18 to 20)
Summary:
When Deng Xiaoping came to power many changes were brought to China. China was beginning to open up to the world. People's personal lives were also changing. So were the politics and economy.
