After the end of the First World War Germany was put to blame for causing the whole of the war. As such they were made to pay back the entire cost of the war, a debt that was only recently repaid. Due to this crippling of the economy Germany was hit hard during the depression. It was not uncommon for people to walk around carrying full suitcases full of bills, or use them to burn for kindling. In the end these deplorable conditions allowed for a new government to rise, of nazi doctrine.
