Being in close proximity to oil fields Stalingrad was undoubtedly going to be a vector for the Nazi invasion. Due to it being a city all of the combat was urban, and much of the battles were made worse by the terrible weather. Eventually the Nazi's were expelled but the city was reduced to a smouldering heap.
