This event was inspired by Mao Zedong.The aim of this even was a 'pure' form of communism.
Although the revolution was Mao's idea it was largely initiated and carried out by the Red Guards.
The Little Red Book was the symbol for the revolution. It was given out to everyone in China and they all had to live by it. It contained quotes from Mao.
"Specialists" were forced to do labour. The Red Guards felt that although they had a profession they needed to get in touch with hard, working labour.
Zhou Enlai, Mao's second in command and prime minister starting in 1958, avoided disaster when the Red Guards became violent by ordering the PLA to put them down.
The revolution ended in 1969.
